Divya, the number on that screen was never the size of you. I watched you shrink in front of it in that hot little café while the man at the counter pretended not to see you cry. You thought your whole life had just been decided by a website that kept crashing. It hadn't. Ten years later you are a woman who fixes things, who rings our mother every evening, who laughs too loudly at weddings. None of that was on the…

Ammi, I took one of your dupattas with me when I left for Glasgow. The old cotton one, washed so many times it has gone soft as a page. I didn't ask. I folded it into my suitcase the night before the flight while you were in the kitchen making parathas for the journey, and I have slept with it under my pillow for two winters. It doesn't really smell of you any more, but if I close my eyes I can find it: the oil, the…

Ellie, we were right to stop, and I want to say thank you before I say goodbye. Three years of setting alarms for each other's evenings. Three years of watching you eat breakfast while I ate dinner, of holding the phone to the window to show you my rain while you showed me your snow. We got so good at the distance that we forgot to ask whether we were good at anything else. I'm not angry. Most days I'm not even sad.…

Priya, you laughed the whole time. Six hours in water up to our knees and you told me the plot of every film you had ever seen, badly, on purpose, until the whole compartment was laughing with you. I got off at Dadar and realised I never asked your number. Every monsoon since, I look for you on that train.
